UPC-A Barocde
UPC-A is a 12 digit, numeric symbology used in retail applications.
It usually carries a GTIN-12.
UPC-A symbols consist of 11 data digits and one check digit. The first digit is a number system digit that normally represents the type of product being identified. The following 5 digits are a manufacturers code and the next 5 digits are used to identify a specific product.
Variants:
- UPC-A+2 is an extension of UPC-A that includes a
two-digit add-on, named EAN-2.
- UPC-A+5 is an extension of UPC-A that includes a
five-digit add-on, named EAN-5.
- UPC-E is a barcode symbology derived from UPC-A that
is designed for small packaging.
- UPC-A symbol can be converted to an EAN-13 symbol by
prefixing the GTIN-12 with 0 to make the equivalent
GTIN-13.
Data and Options
- The data field for a UPC-A may contain eleven or
twelve digits.
- If eleven digits of primary data are supplied then
the check digit is calculated automatically.
- The ShowText option should normally be
supplied.
